Our Valley

Follow the winding mountain road, ride the scenic ferry, and travel along the expanse of our beautiful lake until you find the hidden gem of the Kootenays. Where the Selkirk, Purcell, and Monashee mountains meet is a valley decorated with old growth forests, multiple hot springs, dozens of natural lakes and streams, waterfalls, white sand beaches, cliffs, trails, and some of the best views in the Kootenays.

IMG_1264.JPGThe first inhabitants of this valley were the Sinixt, or Arrow Lakes people. They have a 10,000 year history of occupation that is verified by archaeological and historical records. For various reasons, in the last two centuries they have all but vanished from the landscape but are fighting back from the edge of extinction to once again become an integral part of their homeland. Nakusp’s settlement history began in 1892, when it became part of the fur trade route, as well as the jump-off point for some of the early silver, lead, and zinc mining in the Slocan Valley.

Our quiet, lakeside mountain town, is known for its outdoor recreation, quaint shopping and friendly people.
